Tuesday, October 6, 2025 (Day 10), it’s been 24 hours since I cleaned Starbuck’s roots. I can tell by the silvery appearance of her roots that she is ready for water.
The only water I give my orchids is filtered water treated with Cal-Mag. It contains calcium and magnesium that plants use for maintaining strong stems and vibrant leaves. It is safe for orchids and should not be considered food or fertilizer. I just add 1/2 teaspoon to a gallon of filtered water.
For now, I’ll fill her half way to the base of her stem. As time goes on, I’ll lower the water level to coax new root growth. She will keep this water for two days and then she will have two dry days. This cycle will be continued for about a month, or until new roots begin to grow.
| WATER 1.0.1 A lot of plant enthusiasts use distilled or reverse osmosis water. I prefer to just filter my own tap water. Distilled and reverse osmosis water have all of the minerals removed. Many of the minerals that are removed are actually good for plants. What does need to be removed from tap water is Chlorine/ Chloramine and Fluoride. Water filtering pitchers can do this as well as removing other heavy metals. Another simple solution is to use tap water conditioner that is sold for aquariums. Just a few drops are needed for one gallon of water. It is super concentrated requiring only 1/4 teaspoon for 20 gallons of water. The water where I live is very hard, so I prefer filtering to conditioning. |
