I Bought a Fish Table!

Over the past couple of years, any time I needed to work with my plants, it meant taking over the island in our kitchen or utilizing my workbench in the garage. All in all, cleanup was easier in the garage where we have a deep sink, but it’s really hot in the summer and cold in the winter. We live in North Texas and most of the year there is a time when the temperature on our covered patio is nice, so I started looking for a potting station that I could buy or build.

I started my search looking for a deep sink and found one with a small counter top. It was nice, but there wasn’t much work space. I looked at stainless steel utility sinks, but they were pretty flimsy. I looked at potting benches, but the ones in my budget did not have very good ratings and their work surfaces tended to be about 32″ high, which is too low for me. I looked at outdoor grill stations with sinks and they were very nice, but they really pushed my budget. After months of looking and not finding what I really wanted at a price within my budget, I came across a “Fish Cleaning Station” that is just about perfect for what I wanted and within my budget!

For me, this table works extremely well! The sink is shallow, but for what I need to do, it’s perfect! We have found a few down sides to this table, but nothing we couldn’t work around. The hose that comes with it is so curly that it’s very difficult to use, so it’s been replaced with a real hose. The shelf that’s included isn’t very strong so I’ve removed it. It also didn’t come with leveling feet and our patio is far from level, so we’ve used additional pipes with pipe clamps to level it. We’ve also made some changes to the plumbing. My husband also added a PVC manifold to make turning the water on and off easier.

I’ve added a wire shelving unit that we weren’t using for storage and additional workspace as well as a wood shelf above the table. Without the shelf that came with table, I now have room for some old plastic storage drawers that I no longer use to give me a semi-weather-safe place to keep nursery pots and other supplies.

I’ve used my table several times now and I absolutely love it. I’ve even used it at night with a magnet mounted lantern, and light from our porch and yard lights.
