Welcome, Hootie Pie

On August 31, we went to the Dallas Plant Con; my one goal was to purchase a new orchid. In my mind, I was searching for a Phalaenopsis, but I didn’t see any. What I found was a Blue Vanda Pachara Delight and I named her Hootie Pie.

Hootie Pie was long and tall with narrow leaves and a 12″ long, wild tangle of roots that had grown in and through a small black plastic basket. When I got her home, I made the mistake of thinking a Vanda was just like a Phalaenopsis. After all, a vanda is an orchid, isn’t it? I even bought a glass vase for her. I then cut away the plastic basket doing as little damage to the roots as possible. After inspecting her roots, I got rid of the root plug that she had from her initial planting and began trimming away what appeared to be dead or dying roots and filled her vase to the bottom of her stem base to soak for 24 hours.

While at Plant Con, I also purchased a Peperomia Caperata Rosso that I named Rocinante, or Rossi, for short. Being a terrestrial plant, I never even considered water culture or hydroponics for him. I did find a cute pot for him at Plant Con and transferred him into that as soon as I got him home.

Poche was doing will in Water Culture, so I decided it was time for Chandebise to move to Water Culture. I removed him from his pot, cleaned and trimmed his roots and gave him his first soak.

Meanwhile, the sofa table I had purchased to allow me to place my orchids in the window behind the couch was delivered. I got that put together and Poche, Chandebise, Hootie Pie and Rossie and a couple of my niece’s plants moved onto it.
